UN Ends Penalties on Syrian President Before White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a US resolution ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the following week.

He became transitional president following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to UN sanctions as the leader of the religious organization the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for their support of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US in the current year. In September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
